He doesn’t ask their names.
He doesn’t deserve to know them.
Ransom Riley Hale's friends think his life is charmed: first string as a freshman on a championship-winning college football team. A father with two Super Bowl rings. A mother with platinum albums and multiple Grammies under her belt. But that brilliant shine on the surface hides the darkness beneath; it's all Ransom has ever known.
Despite the shadows he walked in, once there was a blinding light fracturing the darkness. It brought the promise of hope and happiness. He’d been careless, filled with pride and stupidity and lost that light. Ripped it from the world.
Now, the shadows are dimming again. Aly King surges into his life threatening to pull him from the darkness. She is everything Ransom can never be again. Her light feels too warm, promises him that there is more waiting for him beyond the shadows.
But the shadows are relentless, resurfacing when he thinks he is safe, and Ransom knows he must keep Aly from them too before he pulls her down into the darkness with him.
This read played with so many of my senses... Visually it painted the scenery of New Orleans.. the vibe, cultures. It Played with the sounds.. you could practically hear the music, different accent's, languages make out the chatter. And you could feel the emotions of all the characters, feel the music they danced to.. Feel the angst, lust, heartache.. LOVE..
Ransom's story was one of guilt, he tried to be strong for all those around him but was
totally broken inside.. Events that took place in his past and the anger he's always carried lead him to make some really bad turns and he wouldn't let anyone help him find his way back.. He felt he owed a penance and that was that!!!
Aly was a strong girl who managed to make it on her own and took control over her future not the one her father thought she was meant for.. She was reserved, motivated and determined. Her only Achilles was Ransom.. She watched him from afar for years, watched him slowly crack but knew he would never allow her close enough to help..
This was an angst filled read which grasps you from the start.. Ransom from reading about him in Thin Love was always struggling with his emotions.. Although never to this extent.. He always had his family to turn to but chose not to and that's when he started to sink.. I Love how Eden Butler took us on this trail with a somewhat blurry, mysterious vibe.. You never really knew what happened.. We found out when she wanted us too..
That damn Epilogue Killed me.. I was expecting rainbows and butterflies.. Not even close.. Very Genius but wicked of you Ms. Butler.. I Am Hooked!!!
